![]() You’ve always needed Mathematica to run Mathematica-made applications. Or, putting it another way, Mathematica was the development environment and the runtime all in one. For the first time, developing with Mathematica doesn’t have to mean deploying with Mathematica too. Both economical and powerful, Player Pro can be the runtime for almost any Mathematica application, with developers “building in” what is Mathematica’s engine to their applications, or with users equipping themselves independently with the Player Pro runtime. And up until now, local deployment of Mathematica applications has needed each user to have a full version of Mathematica. But server-based deployment is not the best methodology for all scenarios. What about the subsequent deployment to your users? For some time, webMathematica has offered an innovative approach, suiting the range of cases where running off a centralized server and interfacing through a browser is what’s wanted. Its versatility, modern programming language, Workbench and automated interface building combined with tremendous computational abilities and symbolic architecture make it uniquely suited for quickly building powerful technical applications of any scale. Mathematica has increasingly had many elements of a great development environment, particularly since Mathematica 6. I consider this a broken app, with low quality standards (I bet it isn’t native) which is unfortunate being that their desktop app works so well and is delightful to use.I’m excited about Player Pro’s release not only in its own right but because of how it will broaden Mathematica’s scope, adding a pivotal deployment stage to Mathematica’s development workflow. Another issue is the interface, Mathematica notebooks do not fit well to the screen size and zooming in is a pain. This app is hopelessly unresponsive and sluggish (even scrolling is slow). Sure sharing notebooks between devices is great but that’s as far as “cloud” should go. Cloud execution only makes sense for enterprise users where personal computing resources are lacking, sadly this app neither provides “superfast cloud execution” nor does it make use of the phone/tablet’s local computing power. Furthermore the evaluation of cells should be done on the device instead of the cloud as most of the newer phones and ipads have decent specs and would handle most workflows. Little has changed since the release of this app, the devs should focus on improving the interface and speed of this app. ![]() If Wolfram Cloud suits you, get the 11.87 MB app for 1.5.6 on PC.
